Dietrich Rebholz-Schuhmann
Prof Dietrich Rebholz-Schuhmann is a qualified medical doctor. He holds a masters in medicine, a PhD in immunology and a masters in computer science. During his research career, he established several world-class bioinformatics services and managed and participated into several large-scale research projects. He has successfully published well-cited papers in different scientific domains and is editor-in-chief of the Journal of biomedical semantics. From 1998 to 2003, he worked as Director of Healthcare IT in the start-up company LION Bioscience AG in Heidelberg and coordinated a large-scale research project for the validation of biomedical pathways in collaboration with the French company ValiGene. From 2003 to 2012 he was research group leader at the European Bioinformatics Institute, in Cambridge doing research in biomedical literature analysis. The research work at the EBI in recent years was focused on the extraction of facts from scientific literature in molecular biology. Prior to his appointment as director of Insight@NUIGalway, he was senior researcher at the University of Zürich in the department of computational linguistics, heading the MANTRA project, which will provide multilingual terminologies and semantically annotated multilingual documents, to improve the accessibility of scientific information from multilingual documents.
