Associate Director of Regulatory Affairs
Abbott Nutrition
Paul Hanlon
Paul is currently an Associate Director of Regulatory Affairs at Abbott Nutrition, where his primary roles are overseeing the regulatory approvals of novel food ingredients and providing guidance to food safety programs that govern the control of chemical contaminants. He lives in Columbus, Ohio in the heart of United States.
Working as a toxicologist in the food industry, Paul has developed a passion for demonstrating the importance of risk assessment, which is a product of both hazard and exposure assessments. Far too often, overall risk is forgotten in the constant pursuit of attention-grabbing headlines. He has carried this concept over to his hobby, brewing beer at home, giving presentations and writing magazine articles about the safety of food-grade brewing materials.
Paul is an author on more than 15 peer-reviewed publications, including a publication in 2015 on developing risk-based strategies for controlling chemical contaminants in food. He has been invited to speak on this topic at conferences in Europe, the United States and China. He hopes that establishing robust science-driven processes will help demonstrate the safety of our current food supply.
Paul Hanlon earned his doctorate in molecular toxicology from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and completed post-doctoral work at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Since then he has worked as a toxicologist in both the pharmaceutical and food industries. He is a member of the Society of Toxicology and a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology.
